El Presidente Resigns; Johnston is in as Lakewood Croquet Club President
Lakewood, WA – The President of the Lakewood Croquet Club, El Presidente, shocked Club membership Monday afternoon by officially resigning from his position. Club officials wasted no time in naming Brian S. Johnston III as his successor, and Johnston has promised numerous changes on the horizon.
El Presidente was expected to issue a statement to the press on Monday concerning the special investigations launched into the Jeff Gepner-Andrew Cooper match fixing controversy. The President’s resignation Monday was apparently related to last week’s controversy.
In his statement, El Presidente had the following to say:
“I have been proud to serve the Lakewood Croquet Club in the capacity of Club President for a number of years. In that time, I have had to deal with a wide range of chicanery on the part of nearly every member of the Club, but the latest controversies concerning pay-offs and match fixing have been too much for me. My hands have truly been tied; our rules do not allow me to properly punish those who deserve it. Thus, I have no choice but to step down as Club President, effective immediately.”
El Presidente’s statement to the press was quickly followed by another from the LCC Board of Directors, which read as follows:
“Although we are sorry to learn of the resignation of our Club President, El Presidente, the season continues and we must continue to move forward. As a result, we are proud to announce a new LCC Director… noneother than Brian S. Johnston III.”
Following the announcement from the Board of Directors, Johnston had some messages of his own to deliver. “Things are really going to get interesting, now, aren’t they?” he stated. “Jeff [Gepner] thinks he’s been getting away with a lot in the past few weeks, but that’s going to stop right now. I’ve got lots of plans up my sleeve to change things up around here, and I’m not going to be waiting long.”
Because of the late release of the previous announcements Monday evening, many LCC members have yet to react. We will have exclusive reactions from Club members, including Gepner, Cooper, Tom Carmony and others in the days to come.
