Lakewood Croquet Club to Present Champions Cup VI at Woodland Park in Seattle
SEATTLE, WA – The Lakewood Croquet Club, the leading promoters of extreme croquet events in North America, announced today that Champions Cup VI will take place Saturday, July 21, 2001 at Woodland Park in Seattle, Washington.
The Champions Cup, held each summer to decide the Lakewood Croquet Club Championship, is in its sixth edition this year. The Champions Cup has become the premiere championship in all of extreme croquet. In its previous five years, only two competitors have been crowned Champions Cup winners; Kevin Sutton (1996, 1999, and 2000) and Jeff Gepner (1997 and 1998).
“Each year, this event has grown to become bigger and more well known and we fully expect this year’s edition to be the best yet,” stated Lakewood Croquet Club President Brian S. Johnston III.
Players interested in participating in the event should contact the Lakewood Croquet Club directly (lakewoodcroquet@hotmail.com).
Woodland Park is one of the largest (188 acres) and most well known public parks in the city of Seattle. The land was purchased by the City Council in 1900 from the estate of Guy Phinney, a Seattle industrialist who originally earmarked the land for his residential estate. Today, the grounds include the renowned Woodland Park Zoo, rose gardens, athletic facilities, and more.
The Lakewood Croquet Club, whose popular rallying cry “mallets plus morons equals mayhem” has become well known among the sports’ competitors, was formally organized in 1996 to promote and expand the sport of croquet beyond the traditional backyard game and to new heights of recognition and popularity. It holds events annually in both Washington and Pennsylvania and regularly promotes the sport through its internet website, LakewoodCroquet.com. The award-winning site has been featured in a number of major media forums, including Yahoo! Internet Life magazine.
