Due to a number of scheduling conflicts and aborted attempts at promoting the event, the Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge was not held in 2002. This marked a first for the Lakewood Croquet Club, which has not cancelled one of their major events before or since.
LCC President Brian S. Johnston III took it upon himself to name Club Doubles Champions in the absence of the event and elected to name himself and longtime partner “King of Old School” Tom Carmony to their third Doubles title (all of which were “awarded”, rather than won on the field of play).
