Champions Cup I

VITAL STATISTICS

Date: Friday, August 16, 1996
Location: John Dower Field, Lakewood, WA
Winner: Kevin Sutton

Friday night, August 16th, 1996, was the evening of the first annual Champions Cup tournament, and it proved to be an eventful night. The tournament match began in the early evening, but by halfway through the game, participants were forced to use flashlights to see the course and take their shots. This was a planned part of the event, however, and was handled nicely by all of those involved.

Last year’s field for the Cup featured six finalists; Tom Carmony, Andy Cooper, Jeff Gepner, Brian Johnston, Jeremy Seuss, and Kevin Sutton. Andy jumped out to an early lead, jockeying for position with Brian. The two of them held tightly to the lead, followed closely by Kevin. Andy in fact appeared to have the championship in hand as he breezed through the final stretch of wickets en route to the stake, but all hopes for a victory were dashed when Kevin caught Andy’s ball in a thicket of trees, roqueting the ball repeatedly, sending the leader completely out of contention. Kevin then went on to capture the victory, while Andy reverted to “guerilla” tactics, taking shots at roqueting other opponents, and falling to last place in the final standings.

Kevin was crowned the winner, and received the three-foot tall Cup, which remains in his possession until he must return to defend it, Saturday, August 9th, 1997, at the second annual Champions Cup tournament.
