The IMC made it’s most aggressive push to date this year, sending a six-player contingent north in hopes of returning with the Poison championship belt. The group also posted their best showing to-date, claiming second and third place in the event, before the LCC’s own Brian S. Johnston III captured the win.

Over the previous two years, the IMC challenged the LCC at Champions Cup XI (2006) and Poison (IV). Last year’s Poison event actually featured the unlikely unification of LCC and IMC rivals in an effort to prevent a victory by a troupe of Canadian Interlopers from British Columbia. Their uneasy truce was short-lived however, as the LCC and IMC were once again squaring off at this year’s event.

“We battled, and it was our best showing yet,” said third-place finisher “King” Mike Cough. Each year, it’s been the LCC’s home course advantage though. I want to see them do the same on our courses, playing by our rules.”

“While good hosts, these LCC guys are clearly scared to come down to face us on our home turf,” reiterated IMC head Brandon Lasher at the post-match press conference. “We’re throwing down the gauntlet for 2009 - we’ll see if they step up to the challenge.”

There are rumblings that the LCC might be finally stepping up to that challenge (out of both competitive zeal and outright guilt). Rumors are swirling about a potential July 2009 showdown on either Seaside or Astoria, and IMC and LCC club officials are expected to begin negotiations in the coming months.

SEATTLE, WA – Mr. Brian S. Johnston III continued to build momentum heading into the 2008 season finale, Champions Cup XIII, notching his third win of the year at Poison V, Saturday, August 16th at Mount Baker Park in Seattle. The victory was not an easy one, as he had to battle his way past two members of the rival Ironman Croquet (IMC) organization, both of whom had already qualified as “poison”.

The heated Lakewood Croquet Club (LCC) vs IMC showdown proved to be the most competitive of the three annual matchups, as the final turns came down to the IMC’s Nathan “Super-Stitious” Cole and King Mike Cough going toe to toe with the LCC’s Johnston and “The Franchise” Jeff Gepner (all four competitors were “poison”). Gepner stacked the odds against Johnston, his club-mate and former longtime rival, by accidentally eliminating himself, striking a wicket on a long distance shot.

Gepner’s screw-up was the second self-elimination by an LCC competitor. “King of Qualifying” Tom Carmony, who finished the course first and qualified as the first “poison” player, accidentally cleared a wicket from a distance of 75 feet (after missing an IMC player’s ball) and struck the inside edge of that wicket to disqualify himself. He was the third elimination of the “poison” round.

The LCC hosts were outnumbered from the start, six to four, by the competitors from Oregon (one competitor from the University of Washington’s Honors Croquet League also took part), who made the trek up I-5 for the weekend. Johnston and Carmony jumped out to an early lead, with IMC’s Cole and Brandon Lasher in close pursuit. Carmony began to pull away, along with Gepner, who rebounded from a horrendous start to take a second-half lead.

Carmony was the first to stake out and reach Poison, with Gepner close behind. The two apparently reached an unofficial truce, however, as they clearly expressed no inclination to eliminate one another, instead focusing on targeting IMC competitors.

“I’m not going to say whether there was any agreement, so to speak,” said Gepner in a post-event interview with the press. “I will say, however, that we certainly had the best interests of the LCC in mind, and we wanted to make sure that the title stayed with the club, in the state of Washington.”

Carmony was less vague.

“Oh yeah, we had a pinky promise,” stated the King of Qualifying. “Jeff may not want to admit it, but it was his idea. I said, ‘do we REALLY need to hook pinkies to agree to this?’ but he insisted. It seemed a bit strange to me.”

Poison V marked the third consecutive year that the IMC made the trip north to challenge the LCC on their home turf. LCC officials have vowed to finally return the favor and are making tentative plans to journey to Oregon next season for a showdown on IMC turf.

“While good hosts, these LCC guys are clearly scared to come down to face us on our home turf,” reiterated IMC head Brandon Lasher at the post-match press conference. “We’re throwing down the gauntlet for 2009 - we’ll see if they step up to the challenge.”

Event Notes: Defending Poison Champion, “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton, was unable to defend his title at this year’s event due to a family commitment. He made a brief pre-match appearance to drop off the championship belt and vowed to be in top form for the final match of the season, Champions Cup XIII in September. LCC regulars Dianne Learned, Kristina Johnston and Jenn Sutton were also unable to make the event, due to other commitments. All are expected to be on hand for next month’s Cup.

The event, the final LCC Major prior to the end-of-the-season Champions Cup, marks the club’s second foray into the Mount Baker neighborhood (June’s Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge was also held in the area).

Poison V will also feature the return of Oregon’s Ironman Croquet group, who will once again make the trek north on I-5 in a valiant, albeit doomed, attempt to wrest one of the LCC’s championships away from them. The IMC took part in last year’s Poison IV, but came up short as “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton took the victory in a marathon match-up.

Poison is an open event, meaning all competitors (even newcomers) are invited. If you’d like to take part, simply RSVP via email to lakewoodcroquet@yahoo.com or simply show up on Saturday.

MARYSVILLE, WA - The Lakewood Croquet Club’s (LCC) annual single elimination, match-play tournament (where competitors battle in one-on-one matches in a nine-player “bracket”), saw the crowning of its third different winner in three years, as current LCC Singles and Doubles Champion “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton added to his trophy case, eliminating Nikki Gepner in the finals to capture his first “Champion of Freedom” title.

Sutton also notched victories over Kristina Johnston and the other half of the Gepner tandem, “The Franchise” en route to the final round.

The opening round proved to be the most eventful in the tournament’s short history, as a number of top competitors bowed out early. Last year’s winner, “King of Qualifying” Tom Carmony, was ousted in his opening match by Nikki Gepner. The 2006 winner, Jenn Farrell, saw the same fate, as she was eliminated by Jeff Gepner. Perhaps the biggest upset of the opening matches saw former Champions Cup winner Mr. Brian S. Johnston III downed by his sister-in-law, Angela, in only her second LCC match.

The victory gave Sutton four of the five LCC “Major” championships: The LCC Championship (from winning last September’s Champions Cup XII), the Poison Championship (from August 2007’s Poison IV), the LCC Doubles Championship (from June’s Coleman Challenge) and now the Championship of Freedom from the Independence Invitational.

SEATTLE, WA – “Mr. Fantastic” continues to roll through the Lakewood Croquet Club (LCC) ranks, as the reigning Champions Cup and Poison winner added the 2008 Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge to his trophy case, as he and partner Brian S. Johnston III staging a stirring come-from-behind win to capture the annual doubles championship Saturday afternoon at Coleman Park on the shores of Lake Washington.

Johnston and Sutton, who led for an early segment of the two-hour match, found themselves precariously close to defeat at the match’s end. They lost their lead at the mid-way turning stake, as the team of Kristina Johnston and “King of Qualifying” Tom Carmony leaped from third to first with a commanding run of shots, while BSJIII and Sutton found themselves entangled off the course, stuck in a concrete wall.

Carmony and Johnston continued their dominating play throughout the second half of the match, until they ran into difficulty staking out at the surprisingly difficult closing wickets. This allowed BSJIII and Fantastic the opportunity to close the gap, despite interference from Gepner and Farrell, who declared kamikaze late in the match. BSJIII and Fantastic even managed to fight back from a ricocheted shot that left them at the bottom of a hill, more than 100 feet from the closing wickets. Johnston managed to clear them from a shrub and Sutton nailed a stellar uphill shot to jettison them back into the thick of the race.

The action continued back and forth until Sutton made a tough-angle shot to clear the first of the final wickets, them rolled on to stake out and capture the victory.

“Despite what Kristina and Tom might tell you, this one was NEVER in doubt,” claimed Brian S. Johnston III at the post-match press conference. “As soon as Mr. Fantastic and I were drawn as partners in the pre-game draw, we were clearly the favorites. This was destiny, my friend, destiny.”

Johnston and Sutton’s victory also helped both edge out other potential competitors from a guaranteed spot in the finals of this year’s Champions Cup. The winner of each “major” (the Triple Steak Trifecta of Death, the Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge, the Independence Invitational and Poison) earns a guaranteed spot in the final round, as does the defending Cup winner. Sutton, the winner of last year’s Cup, is a lock for the finals, and Johnston already qualified by winning the Triple Steak two weeks ago.

“Brian would love for it to be just him and Kevin in the finals of the Champions Cup,” stated “The Franchise” Jeff Gepner. “One on one, his odds of winning the Cup would actually be greatly improved – probably, what? Ten percent now?”

SEATTLE, WA - As the saying goes, "when you assume, you make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'." Or in this case, The Franchise makes an ass out of himself.

SEATTLE, WA – The first call went out at about 1:30pm. The 2008 Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge was scheduled for a 1pm start, and most of the expected players had assembled at Coleman Park, in Seattle’s Mt. Baker neighborhood, by that time. Save for two - “The Franchise” Jeff Gepner and his wife Nikki.

Lakewood Croquet Club (LCC) Director of Reminders and Phone Call Follow-Up Tom Carmony called Gepner for a status update, assuming he was having trouble finding the location, a park in which the LCC had never previously played.

Actually, Gepner had never left his house.

“I thought it was cancelled!”

Due to recent inclement weather in the Seattle area, the question of whether or not the 2008 Coleman Challenge might be rained out was up in the air until Saturday morning. At that time, based on the latest weather reports, LCC Officials emailed out a memo to competitors that the event was on as originally scheduled.

Gepner didn’t get the memo.

“It was ‘off’ unless it’s ‘on’, right?”

The Franchise’s confusion on the matter has led to the proposition of a second Gepmendment (Gepner-inspired amendment) to the Official LCC Rules:

Section 42, Paragraph 3: The Second Gepmendment
“It’s on, unless it’s off.”

Unless explicitly stated otherwise by Club Officials, any previously announced LCC event shall be assumed to be played as scheduled, on the date and time and at the location originally specified. In the event that date/time/location of an event is changed, or the event is cancelled, LCC Officials shall make reasonable efforts to notify competitors of said changes, including (but not limited to) by phone, email, the LCC website and Twitter.

It was just the wrong Johnston ending up on the winning side of the equation.

Doubles partners for the 2008 Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge were selected randomly (via a ball draw), and the pairing of “King of Qualifying” Tom Carmony and Kristina Johnston had never teamed before. The tandem of Brian S. Johnston III and “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton were the clear favorites at the outset of the match, particularly as Tom and Kristina struggled early, falling to third and trailing for much of the first half of the match.

The tables turned, however at the turning stake, as both the teams of Johnston/Sutton and “The Franchise” Jeff Gepner and Jenn Farrell found themselves off the main field of play and struggling to hit the half-way stake. Carmony and Johnston used the opportunity to leapfrog both teams, taking a commanding lead that they held until the closing stake.

The closing stake, of course, is where things began to unravel.

“I think we underestimated the treachery of the course, the lay of the land, at the closing wickets,” said Carmony. “The final stake was positioned just a couple inches from a paved sidewalk, on a pretty steep slope. Plus there was a bit of a fast, compacted dirt channel running down the hill directly in front of the stake.”

“That stake turned out to be our undoing,” added Johnston.

The pair’s struggles opened the way for BSJIII and Fantastic to get back in contention and ultimately win the match. The loss was especially disappointing, as Kristina Johnston’s stellar play got her within a shot of her first event win. The victory would have been Carmony’s fourth Doubles Championship (though only one of those were actually won - three were awarded by then-President and former doubles partner Brian S. Johnston III).

Johnston III got his 2008 campaign off on the right foot with a solid win at the Triple Steak Trifecta of Death at Luther Burbank Park in Mercer Island over Memorial Day weekend.

The Triple Steak events feature a triumvirate of wickets in the center of the course (forming a ‘Y’), giving players the option of choosing their direction after completing the middle wicket. Each player must complete both sides of the “fork”, but they are able to choose for themselves the order in which they do so.

Johnston battled neck and neck throughout much of the match with “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton, who was coming off a strong 2007 season and came into the match as the reigning Lakewood Croquet Club (LCC) Champion and six-time Champions Cup winner.

MERCER ISLAND, WA – Despite a long history of blatant and unabashed self-promotion, the Lakewood Croquet Club quietly rolls out the first major of the season this Saturday, May 26th as the Tenth Annual Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge takes place at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island. Burbank, nestled on the shores of Lake Washington, also hosted last year’s Coleman Challenge event.

The Gary Coleman Memorial Team Challenge was first held in 1998 and has been played annually to crown the LCC’s Doubles Champions. Three-time champs “Mr. Fantastic” Kevin Sutton and “The Franchise” Jeff Gepner are looking for a record fourth straight Coleman Challenge victory, after having taken the gold in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 editions of the championship.

The Coleman Challenge is set for a 3pm start-time this Saturday. It is an open event and any/all participants (both current LCC members and newcomers) are welcomed. Players are encouraged to bring a doubles partner, if possible, though competitors without a partner prior to the event will be matched up into teams on Saturday.

Luther Burbank Park is located just off I-90 on Mercer Island.

For those planning to attend Saturday’s event, please drop us a quick email at info@lakewoodcroquet.com to let us know you’re coming, so we can best accomodate the expected number of players.
